'Business sense needed' for fashion success

Designers need to keep the commercial side of the fashion industry in mind if they are to be successful, one expert has said.

Marian Buckley, FashionUK's editor, suggested that being creative is not enough on its own to get to the top of the sector and that an understanding of pricing is required.

"It is ? important to note that however fantastically creative a designer is, good business sense [and] advice is a pre-requisite of success," she remarked.

Ms Buckley's comments were made in response to last month's report from Drapers that French fashion house Christian Lacroix has filed for creditor protection as it struggles amid the financial downturn.

She said while Lacroix is a highly popular brand, it has always been very expensive and appears to have been unable to make itself more accessible to other consumers through accessories and fragrances as some of the other designers have managed to do.ADNFCR-2176-ID-19199738-ADNFCR
