Ecommerce spending to grow, research predicts

18 Dec
Ecommerce is set to see sustained growth over the next decade, a new report has predicted.

According to figures produced by analysts Verdict on behalf of eBay, spending on the web will account for £1 in every £5 of total retail spending in the UK by 2020.

This means web-related expenditure will reach £67 billion over the next ten years, while spending offline will dip from the current figure of £265 million to £247 million.

Online sales of books and electricals will exceed those made in stores for the first time in 2020, the researchers forecast, while demand for clothing, footwear and health and beauty products will also increase.

"Traditional bricks and mortar shops simply cannot afford to ignore the potential growth opportunities available online," remarked analyst at Verdict Neil Saunders.

Earlier this week, data from Coremetrics's Benchmark Survey showed that since 2007, the value of orders placed at the 150 online retailers questioned has risen by 54 per cent.ADNFCR-2176-ID-19519936-ADNFCR
