Fashion designers are "playing it safe"

12 Oct
Many fashion designers have been "playing it safe" with their clothes for next season, one industry expert has observed.

Writer of fashion blog the Clothes Whisperer Kristin Knox said she found ranges for spring and summer of next year to be slightly disappointing , with many brands opting to use subdued colours such as black, white and pastel shades.

She noted that a lot of designers are catering for the trend of people wanting to dress in "street style" rather than high fashion, stating: "I think the whole dynamic is changing with the trends being very street driven right now."

"[Designers] are moving towards something definitely less ostentatious, less trendy," Ms Knox added.

Recent research from Mintel found that shoppers in the UK spend more than their counterparts in some other countries, with the average expenditure per head in 2008 totalling £656.

This was higher than in France and Italy, where the figures were €355 (£319) and €461 respectively.ADNFCR-2176-ID-19403343-ADNFCR
