Guardian posts record website visits

The Guardian saw a record number of visitors to its online portal in December, according to the latest ABCe figures.

Statistics for last month show that 36.98 million unique users clicked onto, an increase of more than a million on figures from November.

The Daily Mail came second in the rankings after its traffic climbed by 5.1 per cent to 32.8 million users, while - which includes content from the Daily and Sunday Telegraph, retained third place with 30.7 million visitors.

However, this was a 0.3 per cent dip on data from a month previously.

"Our thorough coverage of the Copenhagen climate change conference resulted in seeing a 15 per cent month-on-month increase in visits," observed director of digital content at Guardian News & Media Emily Bell.

She added that the event also brought in an increasing number of visitors from the US, with this figure rising by 18 per cent since November.

The Guardian launched its network of websites in January 1999 and was the UK's most popular site by March 2001.ADNFCR-2176-ID-19584352-ADNFCR
