Thanks to sunny weather, easter shopping and the royal wedding, the grocery sector has been given a helping hand to returning to a “respectable” growth levels.
According to Kantar Worldpanel, the sector grew overall by 4.8% in the 3 months leading up to May 15th, with the last month hitting 7.8%.
Edward Garner, communications director at Kantar Worldpanel, said “The market has seen a boost this period, now growing at a far more respectable rate of 4.8% compared to the lacklustre performance we saw in March of 2.6%.”
Waitrose reported 8.8% sales growth and increased its share to 4.3%, while both Aldi and Lidl both reported double-digit growth.
Iceland reported 5.7% sales growth and kept its 1.9% share of the market. Tesco increased their market share to 30.7% and Morrisons to 11.9%. Sainsbury’s share remained static at 16.3%. Asda was the only brand to report a 0.2% dip in its market share from last year.
