Retailers 'to adapt to customer trends this Christmas'

09 Oct
Retailers will have to adapt to changing customer attitudes to shopping this Christmas, one research group has claimed.

According to GfK NOP, a growing number of buyers are prepared to shop around and compare prices prior to making purchases during the holiday season.

"We are truly a nation of deal-seekers now; what we have learned over the last year to 18 months is not to buy the first thing we see but to bide our time," explained Helen Roberts, retail research director at the company.

She added that many retailers have already started promotions in order to attract buyers, with Debenhams, House of Fraser and Laura Ashley all running incentives.

This trend is a continuation of that started by Marks & Spencer last year, Ms Roberts observed, which saw the food, clothing and homeware store's tactic of introducing offers "copied by everybody else" on the high street.

Stores may be boosted by news that consumer confidence has increased, with Nationwide revealing a six-point increase on its index earlier this week, taking the figure to 71.ADNFCR-2176-ID-19401049-ADNFCR
