Social media 'to be key to online marketing'

Social media will have a big part to play in online advertising in the coming years, one expert has predicted.

Chief executive of the Internet Advertising Bureau Guy Phillipson explained that the high number of people using sites such as Facebook, MySpace and Bebo makes them an attractive proposition for those in marketing jobs.

The fact that so many internet users browse these sites makes them "inescapable" for advertisers, who often target their campaigns to fit in with what people do with their day - one of the reasons why breakfast time radio promotions are popular.

"There is no advertising on Twitter at the moment but it will probably come," he predicted, stating that this will add to the ever-increasing rate of revenue generated via the internet.

Mr Phillipson was commenting after The Nielsen Company announced the UK release of Nielsen BrandLift, a new system that enables marketing jobs providers to measure the effectiveness of their online campaigns.ADNFCR-2176-ID-19585813-ADNFCR
